Dear Region 157 families,
Pacifica AYSO Region 157, along with all other Area 2B Regions, will be delaying the start of sports activities at this time. We are following the lead of other youth sporting associations, including the Central Coast Section of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). CIF oversees all the high school sports.
The San Mateo County Health data dashboard is showing a recent spike in new cases and now that SMC was placed on the monitor list, I suspect we will be back on the watch list in a few hours. A return to participation in youth sports will be further restricted by these changes.
After many collaborative meetings with the Area 2B Board and Area 2B Regional Commissioners, a unanimous vote was passed to put the fall season is on hold until further notice. We are hoping we can have a late start and play until the end of the year/early 2021.
We will be communicating monthly with all families who are registered and waitlisted for the fall 2020 season. Region 157 will be sending out emails the last day of each month unless there is a final decision made. In that case, we would notify you immediately.
AYSO is at heart a parent-participation, volunteer-based program to provide world-class youth soccer programs that enrich children's lives. Our mission includes ensuring a safe environment for children and volunteers. AYSO Area 2B does not see the coaching role in these conditions as a reasonable ‘ask’ even for our amazing, wonderful, devoted and capable volunteers.
Another challenge has been getting approval for leasing fields. Both Pacifica School District and the City of Pacifica have recently denied our request for usage at this time.
At the end of the day safety is our number one priority and we feel this is the best decision for our players and volunteers. I’ve had some families ask how the season might look if we were to play. AYSO Nationals has been working tirelessly to make sure our volunteers are properly trained for this pandemic. I encourage you to check out Covid Coaching to see how Nationals is ensuring our players are safe while following. Do know these are live documents and will continue to be updated.
We will continue to keep the waitlist open for families who would like to enroll their child(ren).
While you patiently wait for more information our board will continue to collaborate with the Mayor, Pacifica School District and City to ensure we have fields in case San Mateo County clears youth sports to play.
Lastly, we are working with UK International Soccer to see if they could get a few UK coaches to hold 3 week camps while the season is on hold. Once I have more information (and fields!) we will communicate with you.
We thank you for your continued patience during this unique time.
